BBC News – Big storms compared: 1987 and 2013

BBC News – Big storms compared: 1987 and 2013.

Last one tonight, a comparison of the storm on from the weekend and the famous storm of 1987 – the biggest in recent times. After all the hype, it turned out that there wasn’t actually much to it (at least around this part of the country). However, media outlets all over the place wouldn’t let you forget about it (hmmm what theory could this be?) What are your thoughts on this story? Specifically, think about audiences and how they were engaged. As you may have started to realise – leave your thoughts in the comments section.

  1. Audiences were engaged as they compared to something that happened years ago so implies it must be bad if it only happens every 10+ years. Hurricanes are associated with disasters in places such as America and other Asian countries so the fact they were saying it would happen in Britain, goes against what we as the audience expect. As a result, we wanted to tune in and hear more. Also, because it was compared to a hurricane it made people expect something big and scary when it turned out to be just aggressive winds.
